Chemical peel aftercare: what to do (and avoid) in the first week

By Revive Esthetics Spa | September 28, 2026

One of my favorite details clients mention is how the water fountain in the foyer instantly helps them exhale. After a chemical peel, I want you to keep that same calm energy going at home. The single most important rule in the first week is simple: protect your skin barrier. Keep it clean and hydrated, wear SPF every day, skip heat and sweat for 48 to 72 hours, avoid makeup and active ingredients, and don’t pick at peeling skin.

Chemical peel aftercare in the first week at Revive Esthetics Spa in Willow Grove PA

If you booked with me along the Easton Road commercial corridor in central Willow Grove, you probably chose a peel because you want that clear, fresh glow people rave about after their visit. The peel itself is only part of the result. The first week at home is where you protect the work we did with skin resurfacing, dermaplaning, and a professional-grade treatment to exfoliate and renew the skin.

First 24 to 48 hours after a chemical face peel: keep it calm

Right after your chemical peel, your skin tends to look a little pink and feel tighter than usual. That’s normal. What helps most is staying consistent and boring for a couple days.

Do

  • Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, non-foaming cleanser. No scrubs, no cleansing brushes.
  • Moisturize often with a simple, creamy moisturizer. If you feel dry, reapply. Dryness is your cue, not a challenge to power through.
  • Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every single morning, even if you’re “just running errands.”

Avoid

  • Sweaty workouts for 48 to 72 hours. Heat and salt can sting and prolong irritation.
  • Hot showers, saunas, hot yoga, hot tubs for at least 72 hours.
  • Makeup for 24 to 48 hours if you can. If you must, keep it light and remove it gently.

And yes, SPF still matters in Willow Grove in every season. Even quick sun exposure during a PA-611 commute, especially that morning and late-day sun, can make post-peel skin more likely to discolor.

Days 3 to 7: the peeling chemical peel phase (and what not to “help”)

If you’re doing a superficial chemical peel, day 3 often brings the “is this normal?” moment. You might notice flaking around the mouth, nose, or chin. Some people peel lightly. Some don’t peel much at all. Both can still be a good result.

The rule that protects your glow: Don’t pick, peel, or “roll” skin off in the mirror. It can lead to raw spots and lingering redness.

What you can do instead

  • Moisturize more than you think you need. That tight feeling usually improves once hydration is steady.
  • Keep cleansing gentle. If your skin feels tender, cleanse once daily at night and rinse with water in the morning.
  • Plan your week like you’d plan an easy routine. A lot of my Willow Grove clients book around Easton Road corridor errands so they can keep evenings simple.

What to avoid until flaking is done

  • Retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, vitamin C that stings, or anything “tingly.”
  • Scrubs, dermarollers, exfoliating masks, and microderm at home.
  • Swimming pools and hot tubs for at least 7 days (longer if you’re still peeling), since chlorine and heat can irritate healing skin.

This is the week where people tend to text me because they want the “glowing from ear to ear” look they loved right after their appointment. Protecting the peel is how you get there.

The simple product lineup I recommend after a superficial chemical peel

I’m big on explaining what I’m using and why, because it helps you keep results going at home. After a chemical peel, your routine should feel almost too simple.

Your “yes” list

  • Gentle cleanser (fragrance-free is a safe bet).
  • Creamy moisturizer you can reapply, especially around dry spots.
  • Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning. Mineral SPF is often more comfortable on sensitized skin.

Your “not this week” list

Hold off on retinoids, glycolic/lactic/salicylic acids, benzoyl peroxide, physical exfoliants, and heavily fragranced products until your skin looks and feels back to normal.

If you’re someone who searches “facials near me” because you want predictable results with minimal downtime, this is exactly the part that keeps your peel easy. Simple steps. No guesswork.

Redness, workouts, makeup, swimming: quick answers for week 1

How long will my skin be red after a chemical peel?

Mild redness often lasts 24 to 72 hours. Some people stay a little pink longer, especially around the mouth and nose. If redness is spreading, getting hot, or becoming painful instead of calming down, call me.

Can I wear makeup after a chemical peel and when is it safe?

I generally recommend skipping makeup for 24 to 48 hours. After that, a light, non-irritating base is usually fine if your skin isn’t stinging. Remove it gently. No scrubbing.

When is it safe to exercise or do a sweaty workout after a chemical peel?

Give it 48 to 72 hours before sweaty workouts. A gentle walk is typically fine, but heavy sweating and heat can irritate fresh post-peel skin.

Can I go swimming or use a hot tub after a chemical peel?

I recommend waiting at least 7 days. If you’re still peeling or feeling sensitive, wait longer. Chlorine, heat, and bacteria risk are not worth it in week one.

What should I do if my skin blisters or becomes painful after a chemical peel?

Stop any active products immediately and call me the same day. If you have severe pain, blistering, pus, rapidly spreading redness, or fever, seek urgent medical care. I’d rather you reach out early than sit at home worrying.

Quick note on hair removal: Avoid waxing, threading, and facial shaving on treated areas for about a week. Your skin needs time to settle after resurfacing and dermaplaning.

If something feels off, I want you to call, text, or email me

I’ve dealt with chronic shoulder issues, and her skillful use of techniques, including hot stones and perfectly balanced pressure, has been incredibly effective.

That review is about massage, but the reason I’m sharing it here is the same standard I hold for skincare: careful technique, clear communication, and real support after your appointment. If your skin is more irritated instead of improving, I want to know.

I’m right here in Willow Grove near the Willow Grove Park Mall site and the downtown business strip, and I’m happy to support clients across Willow Grove, Abington, Hatboro, Horsham, Glenside, and Warminster.

Want to keep your routine consistent? If you’re building a plan that mixes chemical peels with facials, take a look at facial treatments in Willow Grove. And if you’re also searching “massage near me, ” I do that too, including swedish massage and deep tissue massage. Some clients even pair skincare with a back facial when congestion shows up on the shoulders and upper back.
